During the CCUS Poland Association’s information meeting on February 25, 2025, two strategic projects were discussed that will play a key role in the further development of CCUS technologies in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe.

Both projects are actively supported by the CCUS Poland Association. We also encourage all stakeholders to express their support as part of the ongoing public consultation process.

BaltiCO₂Net Project (presentation)
During the CCUS Poland Association meeting, Szczepan Polak from Equinor ASA presented the BaltiCO₂Net project, which aims to establish a multimodal, cross-border infrastructure for CO₂ transport and storage to support decarbonisation across the Baltic Sea region.
The network includes 17 carbon capture initiatives and will deliver transport infrastructure with an annual capacity of approximately 23 million tonnes of CO₂, spanning five EU Member States.
The project envisions the use of CO₂ hubs, multimodal transport methods (pipelines, shipping, and land-based transport), and geological storage—particularly in underground formations in locations such as Kalundborg, Denmark.

The application to include BaltiCO₂Net on the Projects of Common Interest (PCI) list was submitted in December 2024, with a decision from the European Commission expected in November 2025.

ECO₂CEE Project (presentation)
In her presentation, Agnieszka Baran of ORLEN S.A. introduced the ECO₂CEE project, developed by a consortium consisting of ORLEN S.A., Holcim Polska S.A., Air Liquide Polska Sp. z o.o., and ORLEN Lietuva S.A.
The project focuses on developing CO₂ transport infrastructure in Central and Eastern Europe, with particular emphasis on the construction of a marine export terminal in Gdańsk, which will enable the shipment of liquefied CO₂ to storage sites in the North Sea.

The project was included on the PCI/PMI list in 2021 and is currently in the feasibility study phase, co-financed through the CEF Energy programme.
An updated application for inclusion in the second PCI/PMI list was submitted in December 2024, enabling continued efforts to secure funding for the design and investment phases scheduled for 2026–2027.
The European Commission’s decision on the project’s PCI status is expected in November 2025.
